Shy of 4 stars. Unusual book that caught me in the right mood. If you’re not feeling it early on, try again later - it’s worth the read but you have to be ready for it.

If you told me even six months ago that a book about a man from Sweden trekking across the recently-colonized land of America would become a favorite read for me, I would have laughed in your face. Turns out, you’d have the last laugh.

This book is brilliant. The writing, the journey, the characters and of course, the landscape! A novel that is so well done, I’ll always wish I could read it again for the first time.

didn’t like it. read it for book club. i didn’t like the narrative voice- felt distance in a way that isn’t compelling to me as a reader. i guess the story is cool when i look back on it. like it’s cool that this guy became a living myth but like i didn’t like how it was portrayed. also supposed to be a western. i hate that description because it is only a western in the most literal sense. like gimme some cowboys or something, not some random ass civil war soldiers as time markers lmfao. kinda annoyed that i wasted my time with this one. sorry folks, it wasn’t for me
