loved loved loved. i get that this is a Shocking Statement for the girlies who have no idea how to describe this beyond 'um... female american psycho?' but i loved the main character and identified with her in a lot of ways - we share a very similar background (live in the same place in the UK, even!) and it was almost like looking into a very fucked up alternate dimension in a way. i felt sorry for her and i wanted to succeed and i know that realistically, she can't, and she's doomed to be her mother and to get worse and to rot, but that urge to be SEEN and KNOWN spoke to me so distinctly there was no way i just couldn't love her even despite her terrible cruelty and the things she'd done.

the book WAS wobbly at parts, will probably age poorly for things that are admittedly funny now but will be nigh incoherent to anyone reading this in 20 years time, and the ending is a bit of a dealbreaker for some (not me, and not after the disappointment of our wives under the sea - that WAS a stinker) but ultimately, it crafted a world that i could understand and relate to in so many ways. really special book for me.

This is, and I do not say this lightly, the single most terrifying book I've ever read — if only because I caught myself mid-laugh gasping in horror.

tI will be thinking about Irina for a long time. As do all the characters that meet her.
Unless they're dead.
Startling, evocative and wildly entertaining, Irina romps around Newcastle and London, using and abusing anyone and anything she can get her beautiful ugly hands on.
With all the makings of a psycho-killer, I found myself questioning how awful this woman really is and how much of this is real. And so, I fell exactly into the trap Clark layed out. What can a white attractive woman get away with? Why will no one believe her terrible terrifying awfulness? Irina, stuck in this trap herself, will do anything to get out of it. Harm herself, harm others, anything to leave her mark.
I have met people in this book, recognise them, and I have met parts of Irina, though not all of her thank god. The desperation these characters feel, most of all Irina, is a palpable inescapable haunting. To be taken seriously, to have love requited, to feel anything at all.
As the book reared its end, I thought Irina might kill again and get her come-uppance this time. Though she does sow the seeds her own downfall socially and career-wise, Irina is still trapped, chasing a high.

I really dont know how to feel the only bit i think i liked of this was the very end

‘My mam always used to tell me that you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. And Eddie from Tesco is a fly, but he's got a taste for vinegar. It's like vinegar is all he's ever had from people, and now he doesn't even know what honey tastes like.’

‘I wonder what the fuck I have to do for people to recognise me as a threat… Do I have to smash a glass over the head of every single man I come into contact with, just so I leave a fucking mark?’
