This one is underrated. Agatha is so good at the old “It Could Be Anyone!!! Oh Yes That Makes Perfect Sense” reveal.

The pros: Miss Marple’s personality and cleverness, the exotic location, the unpredictability.

The cons: Somewhat annoying secondary characters, outdated perspectives on other cultures, incompetent investigation, because Miss Marple is so old she can’t get out and do very much herself.

Overall a good read, especially if you are a Marple fan. But not my favorite of hers.

A healthy amount of Miss Marple in this one, but the cast of characters was a little more flat than in the previous books. She does find an unlikely ally in a grumpy elderly man that was good for some amusement. The setting here is a seaside resort on an island - a setting that's been repeated a few times in Christie mysteries I've read recently - more of a Poirot setting for Miss Marple, glad she took a real vacation!

I don't often enjoy the Marple stories with as much enthusiasm as other Christie works but I did this one. I had worked out the murderer which is rare but still liked the complicated supporting cast and setting.

The mystery is pretty good in this one, probably not who you suspect and with enough twists in other people's lives that the red herrings do actually build up to other nefarious things rather than being easily explained away. Plus Miss Marple is in the story from the very first page and she's having a nice holiday knitting on the beach and we love that for her.

Here's my fair acknowledgment that some of the Caribbean locals are referred to in a caricature-ish way, though I wouldn't say that any of the characters exhibit any special malice toward them because of the color of their skin (it's more of a colonial white supremacy narrative situation). Also a gay man is described as "queer" a couple of times, though I think in the context, it's not intended to be derogatory (yes, I know, it's not the intention that matters, it's the effect. I'm just saying.). As I am neither a person of color nor gay, obviously I'm not a definitive source to make claims about whether the representation is offensive or not.
