This was such a surprisingly amazing book. I was impressed by how each section was written and weaved together, and how without exception every section begins as extremely boring and uninteresting and somehow, through the use of smart storytelling, history, drama, nostalgia and humanity, they all become amazing at the end, making the reader beg for more. I am a fan of the non-linear story-telling if done right and Daniel Kehlmann proves a master of it.
A very classic story about a subject I was completely unfamiliar with, with characters that are real historical figures and others that are torn from the wondrously dark fiction of European lore. Tragic, sad, weird and somehow unapologetic. Adored it. Mostly, I recommend it for the brilliance of the writing style.
