Emma by Jane Austen

Though most of the times, her heart is in the right place, Emma was so obnoxious without any perception on what’s actually going on. You would think that after being so wrong before, she would reflect on herself and maybe change somethings but she does the same thing again. I didn’t want her to change her personality completely but at least I wanted her to slowly realize her shortcomings and develop her character so I enjoyed her character development towards the end. I didn’t like the romance, I thought it was too weird the way they felt like father and daughter or a very older brother and a sister and I didn’t feel any chemistry with them. I also hated the way everyone was so perfectly paired up at the end, it felt so forced.

I always find Jane Austen’s concepts to be good but I don’t enjoy the execution. Also I think her books could be edited and be cut to at least half the page count. If I wasn’t in such a huge reading mood, it might have taken me a long time to finish this.
I feel Jane Austen is not for me, I should probably give up now.

I love Jane Austen! This books was one of the most exciting that I read of hers. The love interest was constantly changing. I loved all the characters particularly Emma herself although at times she was a bit snobbish and interfering, that’s was makes her who she is. I also loved Harriet Smith and Jane Fairfax. Honestly one of my fave authors and defiantly in the top 3 Austen books I’ve read.

Oh man, this was a bummer. I finished Pride and Prejudice, loved it, and thought I could roll on to this one to keep up the Jane Austen high. I was disappointed. As others have pointed out its a lot of unnecessary fluff about manners, feeling, and Ms Bates pratling, with too little plot. Id already watched and enjoyed the movie (2020) as well so maybe that ruined some enjoyment from discovering the plot as well.

I first read this August 2013, and now again May 2019. I was glad to remember the main events of the tale. In this particular story, it made me appreciate Austen’s telling even better in the reread.
