i've come a long way with this one, so it sort of hurts, not gonna lie.
but i'm beginning to wonder if i cannot tolerate dudes from the 19th century being misogynist anymore...
the historical bits were alright, the jibes at the english were alright, but seriously, the whole soppy business between Gwynplaine and Dea was beginning to give me the ick...

I read this because I heard that the titular character was an inspiration for The Joker, of Batman fame. I can definitely see that here in this graphic adaptation. It's a little preachy, but that's not necessarily a bad thing for Victor Hugo's times. The art is uniquely styled and well done.

uhhhhh I'm still in shock over finishing this book. The ending is very worthwhile. In the beginning I absolutely hated this book because because he took FOREVER to explain things and just went on long tangents and was just not telling the story. But about halfway in the book I just had to start reading it as a philosophical book than a fiction book and that really helped. I learned a lot of history though reading this book.Everything does come together towards the end and then you're like "oooooooh."I would recommend this book to people who have patience.

this book was so slow and drawn out. 60% of it could be cut out and not change the story whatsoever. it gets confusing because so many yet so little things are happening and it's hard to keep track. the characters are good, i absolutely need a gwynplaine in my life he is adorable and i got really attached to him, dea, ursus and homo and their relationship. it was bittersweet and a lovely, tragic story. i also think it's a really interesting representation of the monarchy. the last chapter was fucked up and absolutely unnecessary, very upsetting. im glad this got the 2 musicals made of it recently and i hope they make another movie since theres just the shit french one and the silent conrad veidt one, this story has a lot of potential. its really great, but i can't see many people nowadays bothering to read this depressing, boring ass book.

Beautifully written, well-constructed, and classic...however it was hard for me to enjoy. 40% story and 60% history/context without the redeeming element of amazing plot to carry me through. I had a harder time getting through this than Les Mis. It was well-done, of course, but I just can't say I loved it.
