This is the kind of book you can start reading on any given page and find something beautiful and/or useful… and that includes the foreword and the afterword. Great stuff!

Finished reading this remarkable nature writing by Nan Shepherd about her walks in the Cairngorms in Scotland. In the 40s, well before anyone was talking about mindfulness, this book is an ode to minute observation both of the world around you and of its effect on your senses and body. There is a whole chapter on the feeling of falling asleep and waking on a mountain. Read the perceptive foreword by Robert Macfarlane and avoid the facile afterword by Jeanette Winterson!

Lived up to and exceeded my expectations. Beautiful, personal, uplifting writing. It made me sad for the past that has now vanished from this place - e.g. Rothiemurchas forest - but also yearn to go back and revisit these places I’ve been to - Loch Avon especially - and to finally get to to those corners I’ve yet to see - Braeriach, Creag and Dubh Loch, Carn Etchachan.

A beautifully written exercise in observation. I felt Nan Shepherd's love for the Cairngorms deeper as the book went on. The introduction - absolutely exhausting. Despite the main text being just over 100 pages, it took a long time, maybe it needs a more patient reader.
