I really enjoyed the TV series, and of course I was happy to support a fellow Seven Sister (she went Smith and I went to Mount Holyoke). The book was less compelling but enjoyable nonetheless. I’m glad she was able to recognize her privilege and that’s certainly paid off with whatever she earned from the book and the show in income, fame, and other opportunities and benefits.

Maybe because the series diverged and had a lot more to say, the book felt incomplete. I also found myself trying to draw lines between the characters on the pages and on the screen.

I think I would’ve liked to know what was written more than what was. There were a lot of things that felt insufficiently discussed. I’ll have to satisfy those gaps with the show.

I personally think I lucked out in never having watched the TV series because I feel that people are comparing the two too much and they give a bad review. I went into this with fresh eyes and I will say this was insightful and brought forth some reflection upon myself. Kerman writes in a digestible manner and does not overcomplicate things, which I appreciate. I docked it .25 of a star because I felt like almost everything was so surface level that I believe more details should have been implemented for more of an immersion. Most of it was spent on the friendships she developed (which is a great topic to touch on), that I was wanting more of the experience of prison rules, routines, and culture. Regardless, still a good read.

I didn't watch the show, but I found the book to be an interesting look into aspects of the justice system. The author seems to acknowledge her privilege in some aspects, and not in others.

It's a very interesting story, but the flow of the books was kind of strange in that the only clear direction was time itself. I guess that makes sense in prison. I wanted to know what happened after prison seeing as we are given insight into what happened before prison. Did she keep up the relationships she made behind bars? It was just odd that everyone also seemed to like her and saw her as this classic "white girl". Maybe it was the case, but I don't know.

Our justice system is so broken, and I hope restorative justice actions continue to take place and create a better society for those who are incarcerated and I appreciated her insight into this aspect.
