2023 reread: This is the book that made me think I might like magical realism. (I usually don't--I just like this specific story.) I did, however, enjoy this book just as much on the second read through, and liked the ending quite a lot better than the first time through, so this is officially a favorite now.

As an addendum to my content review below, there is some occasional strong language.

Original review:
I'm a midwestern homemaker who does a lot of traditional, fermented style cooking and baking, but also enough of a millennial that the setting of a high-tech start up in CA resonates with me. The fact that this book combined both of those aspects made it a lot of fun.

Also, I can't think of any content that would keep me from handing this to a younger teen or even an older child with advanced reading skills. (I'm not sure children would usually enjoy this book, but sometimes it's just helpful to know that, for instance, it's safe to listen to an audio book when children might wander through the room.)
