3.5 rounded up. This is a quieter story, with the main character losing her job, blowing up her relationship, and then going home to do... not much. The writing is great, and the characters are well developed, but they do infuriating things throughout the whole book. I do like the commentary on identity and being a black queer woman here.

witty and funny, but the story sorta dragged on and we didnt get to see any development in the characters or their relationships :((

This book made me realize that not liking a character does not mean the book is bad. It means the author did a fantastic job at making an unlikable character. Mickey is that - she is self-sabotaging and self-obsessed. However there is still complexity because she did make valid points about being unfairly let go from her job and even some critiques of her relationship with Lex. I also struggled with Mickey because she has done things I have regretted personally and I often found myself yelling at her to not do it but that doesn’t mean I couldn’t empathize with the moment.
Her mother is absent, her dad loves her conditionally, her gf struggles with affirming their relationship with her homophobic mother and she just lost her job. Life was overwhelming and she absolutely had unresolved issues from childhood that exacerbated that. Of course she wasn’t going to behave in a way that made sense to the reader. But it doesn’t excuse her actions.
Justice for Lex!!!

I think my main struggle is everything that happens in the book is in the synopsis. Of course that’s an exaggeration. But I was thinking at the halfway point like dang we’re finally getting to this. The story is about the journey and struggles of the character, I think the ending was fitting.

A decent effort, but lacking some emotional range and unrealistic in the strength of relationships the protagonist does not seem to be investing in.
