I read this in one go. A fairly quick read, it was entertaining, interfering, and original. Pleasantly surprised, definitely worth a read.

Great read!!

When getting into this I was coming in pretty blind. I did not expect to care so much for these characters or this town! Will be looking into more by the author!

This book is about a seventeen-year-old boy, Joel. It starts off with Joel's father running over a deer, and eventually, Joel loses his entire family in a tragic car accident. Joel moves in with his Aunt Sandy.

What did I like about the book?

1. I love the book cover. It feels nice to the touch & I love the design.

2. Although tragic, I love the fact that Joel is a handicapped main character. You don't see a lot of that at all.

3. The author had a diverse cast of characters.

4. I could relate to Ash as a character. She was probably my favorite from the book.

5. Although I didn't enjoy the ending, I did enjoy a different twist with how the book ended. It did break a major rule, but I love rule breakers. Kudos to the author.

What didn't I like about the book?

1. A lot of parts are confusing to me. We would have these short scene breaks that don't really aid the story.

2. The ending was a little too much for me.

3. Long-winded chapters that can be around 20-30 pages long at a time.

4. Too fast paced at times.

5. I couldn't figure out if they were just monsters or zombies? I'm still left with questions about this.

6. No real emotion for the loss of his family, but for his football. I would think any child or teen (despite what type of parent they have) would be devastated or at least traumatized. That part brought the story down for me.

Bottom line, it was just an okay read. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great either. It just fell in the middle for me. It has great potential if it wasn't so jarring & fast paced. "And this happened & you won't believe what happened next!" Don't tell me, show me. That extra dialogue could be cut out. The book reminds me of "Lord of the Rings" meets "The Walking Dead" meets "The Stranger Things." It is a quick read. If you love gore, this book is up your alley. The author brings us the gore.
