An engaging adventure with horror, magic and mystery. The concept of film as ritual and magic is, to me, unique. I enjoyed the care the author took to explain how the magic system works through the characters and progression of the story - it could have easily gone sideways and devolved into a nonsensical mess but it felt like going through a tutorial, so by the third act we have an idea of what is happening. I loved the main characters even when I didn’t. I felt they were well developed, and at the end of the day the story is also about their friendship and love for each other. It adds some cheesiness to the plot but that wasn’t an issue for me. Overall it’s a fun read that picks up the pace as it goes.

A tribute to foreign cinema, adversity, and overcoming your own demons, this book inspires everyone to embrace their own magic.

This was absolutely incredible. So well-written and the concepts were unlike any other horror I've ever read which was so refreshing

I would actually give this book a 3.5 but rated it a 4 here because the 3.5 is my fault. I ad a lot of health issues this past year that caused me to take a very long time to read this. That said, I really enjoyed this book! I loved the magic and horror of it all. The description of Tristán’s dead girlfriend in his apartment was terrifying! The occultism and Ewer’s obsession with pure lineage was believable too! It felt like Moreno-Garcia did a lot of research for it. I also absolutely loved how the book ended! Momo was fighting the ghost of Ewer’s the whole book but it really felt like that ghost was herself. She was fighting what she thought was the worst of herself. Very relatable!

I really liked the premise of this novel (literal movie magic!) but I found the execution so dull. Most of the characters' motivations are just straight up fed to you in exposition and neither of the point of view characters is especially compelling. None of the attempted emotional beats with them land at all because they don't feel like people with real lives and goals. The '90s Mexico setting was cool and there were a few good scares but overall not that great.

Overall I really liked this book- I
felt like the character development was much improved from the books that I’ve read of hers in the past. I’d highly recommended it to anyone who can handle supernatural horror. A lot of if also felt very historical fiction heavy, with all the elements of old Mexican horror movies inserted throughout, and I really enjoyed that about it.
