Once again, Maurice Druon knows how to put us right in the France of the late Middle Age. This book has more intrigue that its predecessors, every chapter makes a new step to the resolution of those intrigues that decided the future of a kingdom and history.

Another solid entry to the Accursed Kings series. While not nearly as politically driven as the last book, which I enjoyed immensely, this one deals mostly with the familial struggles, especially within the Artois branch of the family. My one complaint is that, like the last book, the title of the third book in the series is a giant spoiler -- if you, like me, know nothing about French history. Otherwise, it's another delicious book in the series that continues to up the ante for the characters. And I say "characters" because this is, after all, historical fiction, and, despite not knowing anything about the French monarchy, I am pretty sure Druon took some liberties with his characters. Still, even though you know the fate of some of these characters, you can't help but root for some for them (I am team Philip V and team Clemence of Hungary).

Definitely can't wait for the next book.

Felipe ha muerto, lo sucede Luis X en el trono y su turbulencia no ha dejado dormir a Francia hasta que consigue a una esposa nueva. ¿Califica como spoiler decir que Luis X muere luego de dos años de reinado? El libro se concentra en relatar cómo Luis contrae segundas nupcias y las intrigas tejidas por la corte en esos años porque la balanza del poder jamás se mantiene estática.

Más allá de eso, es un libro que trata sobre un entramado relacional que estira los lazos de consanguinidad para tocar un poder que es a la vez de la realeza, político y económico. La parentela de los reyes cruza territorios enormes porque son los intercambios familiares quienes dan sentido a la articulación de los nobles. Paralelo a esto, Druon enfatiza cuestiones como que un noble caído en desgracia sigue teniendo su nobleza como un blasón que lo distingue incluso de aquellos que han conquistado la riqueza material. Todos estos pequeños matices dan una textura impresionante a la reconstrucción de texturas importantes: la vida cotidiana, el mundo económico, las diferenciaciones sociales, etc.

Not quite up to the last two of the series but then they were masterworks and this is just a really great novel. I feel like Druon was right there watching it all as it happened so he could report it all cynically back to us. I hope to read the series again in a decade or two.

Now on Book 3, and the series remains incredibly entertaining. King Louis continues to be an incompetent fool, though this time with a new queen who slowly starts to realize she married into a very dark situation. Meanwhile, royal cousins Robert and Mahaut (whose combined scheming prowess could easily generate its own spinoff) escalate their already extravagant rivalry via fomenting revolt, cultivating new alliances, and dabbling in poison. All while pretending to be extraordinarily innocent and much aggrieved at how unfairly they're treated by each other and the crown.

Esta libro ha sido un poco decepción comparado con los anteriores libros de la saga. Tendrá un 3,5 aunque me he arrepentido un poco de ponerle a los anteriores 4 estrellas esperando que aún mejoraran más. Este libro en su resumen es amor, amor, amor y un poco de venganza. Que no digo que esté mal porque en si me he enamorado de una de las parejas que se formaron pero el autor se ha centrado solo en eso. También he tenido unos cuantos problemillas de salud y por eso me ha costado terminarlo, cuando según mis cuentas tenía que terminarlo el 30 de abril. De este libro tampoco puedo hablar mucho más que nada porque tendría que poner spoilers y además casi todo el libro ha sido de lo mismo y eso que eran 252 paginas. Ahora eso si como en los antiguos libros los capítulos como no llegan a ser mas de 15 paginas son fáciles y rápidos de leer. Referente a los personajes ha habido un momento en el que no he sabido distinguir porque eran todos Poitiers o Valois, encima algunos eran de la misma familia y era el tio y el sobrino pero se llamaban igual y a su vez era el hermano del rey . Vamos que ha sido un poco confuso pero espero en los siguientes poder aclararme más. Me han gustado mucho dos personajes nuevo que han aparecido en esta saga que son María y Guccio. He temido mucho por él ya que los hermanos de ella eran muy brutos y solo les interesaba el dinero. Lo más interesante de la novela ha pasado en los últimos capítulos pero ya me lo había spoileado el propio autor que hizo un mini spoiler de los que no soporto tipo " en este puesto del castillo tres persona lo habían poseído durante los últimos dos años". Por lo tanto sabes que el que ahora mismo esta ahi va a morir !
¿Qué si voy a seguir la saga? por supuesto me encantaría que volviera al nivel que anteriormente tuvo y espero que introduzcan más personajes interesantes.
