Oddly, this book felt more like an author's first, even though it's Ireland's third. I continue to enjoy her take on historical fiction and her plucky heroines, but the crafting of the prose and occasionally the world-building itself felt a bit less solid than in Dread Nation and Deathless Divide. (Although I can recognize that some of that is due to the first-person limited point of view used in many chapters.) In any case, this is still an enjoyable read, and I'll certainly pick up any sequel Ireland chooses to write.

I really liked the twist Justina Ireland creates with these historical fantasies! She does a great job of including real life historical events with magic. The main character was a strong, smart heroine! It was a fun read!

Interesting mix of real world with magic one. But there is too much action and not enough character (especially side one's) development. So certain events don't have strong enough impact.

This was really beautifully written and a really interesting and fun adventure. That said, there are significant parts of the magic system I wish has been explained more but otherwise this was very good.
