this was better than twisted love in my opinion, and i preferred alex much more in this book than in his own. wouldn't reread soon, but also don't want to throw it into a dumpster fire so that definitely says something. awesome smut (of course) and bridget is a girlboss ok

3.75/5 Rounded Up

I can now say that I fully understand the Rhys Larsen hype.

I really enjoyed both MC's in this - but I'm not positive that I liked it more than Twisted Love (Alex Volkov had a literal chokehold on me until a) the singing scene and b) the last part of the book taking AN ENTIRE YEAR).

What I liked about this:
- Rhys checked basically all of the boxes for a contemporary romance MMC: tall, dark, handsome, tattoos, scars, broody, damaged, possessive, protective… you get the idea.
- Bridget was a total baddie who could look after herself and hold her own as crown princess/queen.
- There was good tension throughout most of the book.

Some things that knocked some stars for me:
- This felt LOOONG. In comparison, I burned through Twisted Love in less than 24 hours and this took me almost two weeks. I was enjoying myself for most of it, but it just felt never-ending at times. 450+ pages for a contemporary romance novel usually feels too long for me, and this was not an exception to that. I lost the urge to never put this down.

While I normally strongly dislike large time gaps in a romance novel because I feel like it causes us to miss out on so much tension and burn and this book seems to be criticized a bit for the gaps, I felt it kind of made sense in this case - the plot of the story (aka her becoming a literal queen) likely wouldn't have taken place over a more condensed time period than this, so it seemed to fit here.

This book is for our fans of:
- Forbidden Romance
- Forced Proximity
- Touch Her and Die
- Royal Bodyguard
- Age Gap Romance
