Meh

Probably the wrong book at the wrong time for me, so that this review - any review - with a grain of salt. Dark, depressing, funny. I hope you enjoy it. I’m just glad it’s over.

Reminded me of Perks of being a Wallflower, oddly enough.

I really like any book that accurately describes the feeling of war and being away from your family. This goes beyond that point and is better for it.

Nico Walker has a unique writing style that draws from his experiences to create a complex image of America, war, and drugs in the early 2000s.

This memoir was gritty, hard-hitting, and brutally honest. It described addiction and PTSD bluntly. However, I feel like the parts outside of the section about being in Iraq were extremely repetitive. Self loathing, shooting up, trying to get drugs, getting ripped off. It felt monotonous after a while. Overall worth a read though.

It is too easy for the privileged to forget or ignore the struggles of the lowest class. Walker makes vivid and real how his protagonist stumbles through life, with no clear meaning or purpose, his style adapted to the kind of story he is telling. While it tells the story of a foolish and suffering person, Walker is obviously able to see real depth--the impact of environment on individuals, hypocritical social structures, god-forsaken men and their god-forsaken practices, and the meaninglessness we are tempted to assign to life. This was a good book on evil things.

The writing is never going to blow your socks off, but it’s funny, and depressing, and actually pretty insightful. It is also a gripping read. Walker never spares us the details either; whether it be a gory death of a friend during his deployment to Iraq, a depressing attempt to screw a fellow junky, or prepping a dirty rig for his next fix. This one isn’t for everyone- in fact it will probably gross a lot of people out- but watching our unnamed narrator spiral into a heroin induced hell hole is a train wreck you can’t turn away from. Surprisingly excellent.
