I’ve always heard privateering mentioned but reading this book, I realized I never really dove into the topic. The book offered a good background and defined some important vocabulary before diving into the topic.
I enjoyed the flow of the book, with narrative stories spaces in throughout the facts. The Continental Navy has there oft told stories but I hadn’t heard of many of the privateers though their stories are just as interesting.

An excellent nonfiction read! It was full of detail & adventure without being pedantic. Subject matter was really interesting, without feeling too niche, & he had a ton of evidence to support his main thesis. John Adams was weirdly referenced, and the last 2 chapters fell flat (they were redundant & irrelevant).

I recommend to fans of American History, this is a page-turning history book, and not dry at all!

Rebels at Sea is written in an easily accessible narrative style explaining the role that privateers played during the American Revolution.  The book informs the reader of the economic impact that American privateers had on British trade and the resulting economic pressures that impacted the progress of the war.  Land based military activities are the usual focus of books about the Revolution.  Rebels at Sea reminds the reader that military activities on water were also significant to the outcome of the Revolution.
