I loved this book all the way through.

Not that Mapp & Lucia should be viewed through a feminist framework at all, but I thought to myself while reading how odd it was that a man wrote a novel in which I as a woman feel so seen. This is the first male author to do this for me. I'm not sure if that says more about me or Benson.

I had a smile on my face the entire time I was reading this, and I hope Benson's other works are just as rib-tickling and riotous, especially Lucia's and Mapp's other adventures. What a gem!

I think this book was written around 1920. It pokes fun at this woman who is trying her hardest to live up to her own expectations of a modern, learned woman. I guess it would be called a social satire... it is one of a series. I would be interested in getting my hands on the rest of the series.

Leisurely stroll through a small town and the rivalry of it's two leading female citizens. Some of the civilized barbs are hard to find because our code of conduct is so different now but, even though I miss some, Benson always includes one or two stories that give me a good chuckle. In this one he had some clever subtle foreshadowing. Curious to know if Mapp will go through with it...

So funny! Probably even 3-1/2 stars. Sometimes I got a bit tired of their machinations, tho.

Didn't really have much of a plot. Just went from one fete to bridge game, to dinner to another polite society outting. Could be a little boring at times, and hysterical at others. A good read, but sometimes drudgery to get through.
