I was so skeptic when I decided to start this book. I had no expectations and hoped it wouldn't be a bore. While the idea was interesting the author wrote a 500+ pg book that could have easily been summarized in 200 pg. So much repetition I had to skip over pages after pages. It surely felt as if she didn't really have many new ideas and felt forced to repeat the same thing over and over again. It took me about 2 years to read it because I simply was BORED.

This may sound like hyperbole but, Every One Should Read This Book.

Every man, woman and child.

Multiple times in their lives.

Seriously, it explains the experience of so many women, so perfectly, using folklore. After I read this, I understood myself, my mother and many other women in my life so much more.

As soon as I started reading this book I knew I would love it. Diving into fairytales and folklore is fascinating. I was also at a perfect time in my life to read this book. I learned so much about myself and it answered a bunch of questions I didn't even know I had. I am grateful for the friends who recommended that I read this book, they were spot on! And now I pass along that recommendation. I know it is long but it read a lot quicker than you would think.

Good thing I read this in college, thanks women and gender studies, because I'm not reading it again. This book will make you want to rock a long skirt, go to Lillith Fair, and listen to some Dianne Reeves.
I am an endangered species, but I sing no victim song.
I am woman, I am an artist, and I know where my voice belongs.

Plus, I think my aunt loved this book.

I'd heard so many good things about this book, from strangers and friends alike. Many friends said that it was so healing and empowering. I was really looking forward to reading it...

But the author's writing style not my thing. Too much of woman this and women that, and She is, She is, She is. Like, we get it already!

It's too wordy, flowery, and repetitive for my neurodivergent brain. Too many times, I found myself just wanting her to get to the effing point, instead of endless paragraphs of descriptors of women's strengths and their woes. About adjectived me to death. It was boring!  In those early pages, I kept asking, "Where's the empowerment?" There was just a lot of woe-is-womankind, which isn't healing or empowering to me. I ended up skimming a lot, so I'm sure there's a lot of truly powerful healing and empowering parts that I missed.

Given how many people praise and love this book, though, read it for yourself and form your own opinion. Her writing style just isn't for me. Maybe one day, I'll give it another try? May you find it as healing as many others have. I really wanted to love this book, but maybe you will.

I was in a rush to finish this book, honestly.
But now that I finished it, I definitely want to read some stories from the book again at the time they become more relevant in my life.

So my advice is to not hurry it up.
Take as long as you need and just savor every story.

Just a bit too spiritual and abstract for me. Only 40 pages in and it’s already starting to feel repetitive… I don’t need 500+ pages of this lol

Every sentence is like “There is speculation that the immune system of the body is rooted in this mysterious psychic land, and also the mystical, as well as all archetypal images and urges including our God-hunger, our yearning for the mysteries, and all the sacred instincts as well as those which are mundane.” Beautiful but it’s a bit much!

May be not my kind of a book. The initial pages which were quite in number, were repeating themselves on the same theme. Again, it might be only me that before and after each story, there were lengthy explanations which often made me fall asleep. And I felt that even in these explanation the same theme that I read in previous pages were represented in different words. I didn't find story telling to be that great either.
I'd suggest everybody to go through initial 25-30 pages to know the style of the writing and idea behind it before buying. I'm sure it might be interesting for some, but unfortunately for me it was verbose.
