Book 1 is character introductions, the inciting incident that sends them off on the quest for the golden fleece, a few cool side stories that don’t affect the actual quest, and a lot of filler.

Book 2 the journey to Colchis continues, they help a man who can prophesy, get some hints to help them on their quest, get past the clapping rocks, and more filler.

Book 3 in Colchis, Jason meets the king who gives Jason a nigh impossible task to get the fleece, Medea by eros’s arrow fall in love with Jason, cries about whether to help him or not, decides to help him, they meet, she give him a way to beat the near impossible task, Jason does what she tells him, he easily does the task, king is big mad, Medea cries some more thinking her father knows she betrayed him, and she decides to run away with Jason

Book 4 Medea goes to Jason, they decide to get the fleece and flee Colchis immediately, they go to where the fleece is hanging, there’s a big snake guarding it, Jason doesn’t fight the snake, Medea puts it to sleep, Jason grabs the fleece, everyone flees, they pursued, they stop the pursuers, take a very convoluted route home, filler happens, and they return home

It’s overly long and full pointless tangents that don’t affect the story. Book 3 and the first maybe 7 pages of Book 4 are actually good. The rest is painfully slow and bogged down tangents about every single island they stop at and they stop a lot. Jason’s challenge is get the fleece is 4 pages long but his talk with Medea about how to beat the challenge is 5 pages long, and Jason doesn’t even get to fight the snake. I found it mostly boring and difficult to get through.

What a pleasant surprise! I didn't expect to love this book this much! The beginning was a bit challenging but once I got into the book I couldn't help but think about the beauty of this translation. Let's not forget that this poem was written in the 3rd century BC and it still got me on a chokehold a few times. Of course I knew the general story but this version is incredible. The more I think about it the more I like it.

Great translation, puts Medea into focus more than other versions.
