"We must all deal with our shadows the best we can. No one can conquer them for us."
3.5 STARS
This is a solid first installment and has the potential to be an outstanding series. I believe this is the author's debut, and there are some editing issues that distracted me from the overall storyline. (For example, the overuse of the word "I" and short, choppy sentences.) The mystery aspect is somewhat predictable but enjoyable, nonetheless. I adored the banter and chemistry between Lady Darby and Gage. The ending had me on pins and needles, and I plan to start book 2 right away.

Avoid the audio version if you enjoy a Scottish accent. At first I literally thought the character was from Transylvania. Nope, just a horrible attempt. I’ll be avoiding Heather Wilds’ voice in future. That aside, very enjoyable story and characters. I’ll be reading the next one.

A clever historical mystery with just a spark of romance, suspense and danger. The first in a series that I'm now hopeful to binge here soon. 5 ⭐!!!

Th quality of the writing is good which is earning the three stars, but I was nonplussed by the last third of the book which is the resolution. It’s great to be in Scotland, in a castle during the 1830s, with a murder mystery. However, a lot more depth could have come from Kiera’s experience and knowledge after having been an anatomist’s wife. A great deal of medical exploration was taking place at this time and more could’ve been made of it as it is so interesting. How had Kiera been to so many dissections and then become squeamish with the murder victim? I think she should have had much more fortitude given her history. She should’ve surprised us with strength rather than the stereotypical retching and swooning.
The ending reminded me of Scooby Doo when the villain shows up and declares, “Yes, I did it! And here’s everything I did and planned and I would’ve gotten away with it....”

Mixed feelings. Fairly enjoyable, but not fantastic. Author clearly did not do her due diligence about the time period. Pacing was very slow and the mystery was basic. I had it figured out less than halfway through. Characters were pretty compelling. On the fence about continuing, but if I do I will not listen to the audio; narrator was plodding and her inflection/phrasing was downright poor in places.

1830. Scotland. Artist who helps investigate murder. Good beginning to Lady Darby Mystery series.
