I'd imagine a seven year old would like reading this to themself but I didn't really enjoy reading it with the kids.

Fun for any age

Great humor and voice. The action and fast pacing keeps us going. This book made my commuting, so much easier. Also educative regarding roman gladiators.

Fast, fun read with some interesting bits about history (including a glossary) and great English-Latin word-play. The colloquial language brings the characters closer to today's young readers, for older readers it enhances the comedy. I loved how the illustrations/cartoons blend in with the story.

But I sometimes found it hard to allow myself to believe the world Northfield created. On the one hand, Julius knows a lot about the world, but things like feathered helmets and columns have to be explained to him. The device of the know-it-all character Cornelius who explains the world to him is a crutch; Cornelius isn't annoying enough for that.
