A solid enough first volume of a manga series that has left me intrigued. It really succeeds in pacing, setups, and feeling like you are just dipping your toe into a bigger world and story that the author really has planned. It didn't draw out the manga trope of the standoffish character not wanting the new character around, which always tings my sense of disbelief -- this might be a weird thing to mention but I have seen it way too much in manga.

My only major criticism is that the way the manga-ka chooses to depict music in action as a still panel with no voiceovers/thoughts/etc. really didn't work for me. Music would always be tricky to depict in purely visual form, but I think something more creative or dynamic would've made more of an impression than leaving me in what felt like visual silence (which is the exact opposite of music).

A great first volume! I enjoyed all the bits about learning to play guitar with Ritsuka teaching Mafuyu. I feel like I learned some things too. I like Mafuyu a lot as a character. He has an air of mystery and appears lost in his thoughts.
Also, I thought it was neat to get the title drop so quickly with Mafuyu’s boyfriend’s guitar in this case being given to him. Sad that he committed suicide though :(

Uenoyama has found the perfect napping spot at school, but he’s miffed one day to find another guy sitting there. This new person is clutching a guitar with broken and rusty strings, which morally offends Uenoyama, a serious guitarist. He fixes the strings and reluctantly gives it back, and the newcomer begs Uenoyama to teach him guitar. After wearing him down, Mafuyu finally gets Uenoyama to teach him. Uenoyama dreads the task until Mafuyu sings, and Mafuyu’s voice pierces Uenoyama. He introduces Mafuyu to his band mates, Akihito and Haruki, who are both also stunned by Mafuyu’s vocal talents. When a classmate tells Uenoyama that Mafuyu dated a boy in junior high, and that the boy committed suicide, he must figure out what he thinks and feels about Mafuyu, or decide to ignore this information completely.

Was a fun read and definitely is more of a set up for the rest of the series but i am intrigued. I liked the dynamic of the friends.
