If you’re a dedicated fan of the Raksura (this is book four in the series), you will enjoy this, as I did. I just like hanging out with Moon and Jade and Chime and their friends. But the story isn’t nearly as compelling as the first three books, and since it ends on a minor cliffhanger, could be accused of merely being a 400-page setup for book five. It probably wouldn’t be the best introduction to the Raksura if you’ve never read any of the other books, and it certainly doesn’t work as a standalone since you’ll need to read book five to find out what happens—and I’m looking forward to that, although it will be awhile before I can get to it.

Not quite as good or clear as the other books, and I am not a big fan of cliffhangers.

Second read: I actually liked this much more the second time through, but I did still feel it was the weakest.

Another spectacular world building book with solid characters. More travel to distant lands, deception, old cities and how cool they are, more Fell and a twist- 1/2 Fell Raksura characters that really grow on you.

I didn't find it as engaging as a previous story before that was more personal- like when Moon was taken back to his birth court and what was going to happen!? That was really well done.

But these stories are so fully immersive, vividly descriptive and subtly funny that I want to keep reading and am enjoying every bit. I love the interaction between Stone, Moon, Chime, Jade, etc.

And we actually had a risque moment of real heat- between Moon and Chime- that took me by surprise. I think it was the hottest moment in the whole series :) and yes- it was just a moment- to all you readers of Marthas works.

One thing- reading about the Consort that was taken and forced to breed with a Progenitor, that brings me to tears every time. And to name his daughter Consolation? Really hits you. So very well done.
