I'm really enjoying this take on fairytale characters! It's dysfunctional without being soul crushing, which is refreshing.

Definitely going to continue with the series.

The mythology is fun and I feel like there's a lot more to discover in future books. This first one is a play on the stereotypical old-fashioned detective story-- not sure if that continues throughout the series. I especially love the art style, as it lends a lot to the overall tone and themes of the story.

Such a fun premise! And what a heartwarming and hilarious read! There is nothing more satisfying than reading about fairy tale characters from your childhood brought back to life in modern day settings (AFTER the happily-ever-after that we read as kids), especially when they are forced to coexist with their former mortal nemeses.

I love reworkings of fairy tales-- and so when I saw this I wanted to check it out. I grabbed it and was really happy with how clever it was. The art is an old school style--- and this is part of the Vertigo side of DC comics, so it can be more PG-13/R than Batman....but I found it cute/sweet/clever....and just a nice "kick back and enjoy" sort of comic.
The comic is a mystery--- Rose Red is missing and possibly dead....and Bigby (the Big Bad Wolf), detective, has to find her killer-- while Snow White (the assistant governor of fables) stands on the sidelines observing the investigation.

Read if you enjoy a fun comic.

- Book Playlist (Fables Graphic Novel Series Playlist)

-----------------------------------

SUMMARY: (SPOILER WARNING)

We are introduced to an underground community of fables known as Fabletown. All of the fairy tales you know about are real. They come from many different worlds and dimensions. But they all had to escape from a common enemy who was destroying all of their homelands. The only place they could escape to was Earth (aka the Mundy land), which is the only place their enemy didn't seem interested in.

In this first volume, we learn about this world and the characters. As we do, Bigby (aka the Wolf -- Fabletown's detective), and Snow (aka Snow White -- one of Fabletown's community leaders) solve the mystery of Snow's missing (possibly murdered) sister, Rose Red.

UPDATED REVIEW (05/15/2024):
UPDATED RATING (4 STARS)

Still a really cool graphic novel. I read this first volume about ten years ago and then never got around to reading the rest of the series. Now I can hopefully continue reading them!

I really loved the mystery plot line, which allowed us to visit with many of the fables while investigating. It was fun to see so many familiar faces.

I especially loved the scenes with Beauty and the Beast. They are like an old married couple, but still look young. It's funny.

I also loved the scene with Pinocchio. That was hilarious.

I loved the two main characters and their chemistry together too. I especially love Snow. She's such a badass, I love it.

Overall the graphic novel had a great plot, characters, and world building. I'm looking forward to finally reading more from this series. Should be fun!

ORIGINAL REVIEW (01/09/2014):
ORIGINAL RATING (4 STARS)

Pretty cool! I really adore the concept of this graphic novel series.

To give you a brief rundown: Basically all the fairy tale creatures you've read stories about lived in other distant worlds (unreachable to us). A new (and common) enemy came and ran them all out of their own lands, taking over all the Fable worlds. The one world the enemy didn't seem interested in was ours (plain old Earth). So many of the fairy tale characters managed to escape and live in secret within our world.

Such a fun concept and it has loads of potential. Since this is the first volume I could definitely see where there could be room for improvement, but that didn't take away from my enjoyment of it.

The only thing I was a little put off by was predictable the mystery was. I had it figured out early on. But even so, it was a cool graphic novel all around. I love the artwork and I think it's going to only get better.

A little slow at points, but definitely enjoyed this comic, I will be picking up the next one. Love the suspense and exploration of Fabletown.

It's worth mentioning that I played the telltale game before reading the series, so I was expecting just a tiny bit more, but overall wasn't dissatisfied.

An intriguing concept: what if fairy tales had to live in Manhattan, disguised? I found the execution a bit too crass for my taste, unfortunately.

After finishing the Y:The Next Man series I decided to start a new series, and this one had been suggested to me. I love fairytales, and the idea of old school fairytale characters living in modern day New York really got me interested.

It didn’t disappoint either, this was a good story, based on the disappearance of Rose Red, Snow White’s sister. The fairytale characters had been driven out of their world by a dark force, and now live in sanctuary in our world. Rose Red has gone missing and left an apartment full of her blood, and a trail of possible suspects that Snow White and the Big Bad Wolf investigating the scene.

The story is wrapped up nicely by the end of the volume, and we also get a short story of how the Wolf ended up in human form in our world, and some background on what drove the characters out of their world. It got me hooked and wanting to read more!
