I'm having a hard time putting a finger on why I found this book so dislikable. The intrigue is well constructed, and the characterization - particularly of the villains - is incisive. But it all left me so cold.

Should I give another Jack Vance a shot? :/

Not as fun as other Vance. Solid as an audiobook. Narrator has an extremely deep voice which was initially distracting but works well when you get used to it.

For what I expected to be a revenge story, The Star King was not nearly as dark or as violent as I thought it would be. The protagonist is motivated by a pragmatic sense of duty more than he is by hatred, and most of the nasty stuff that occurs in the story is either implied or not described in gross detail. The highlight of the book, for me, was definitely its worldbuilding. The characters, though one-dimensional, were also fairly distinct and memorable.

It was fine. I will continue reading the series, and hope that, as I have been told, it gets better as it goes. It had its moments, but for the most part it was somewhat generic 1960's sci-fi. The Jack Vance flavor was pretty lightly sprinkled on.
