This book was alright. This is a decent tale as an origin story for the sea witch (of little mermaid fame). However, as a book, I feel it was somewhat lacking. The characters and plot all felt a little underdeveloped. I enjoyed the character of Annemette, who got the most focus throughout the story despite not being the main character. And I think the
tragic
ending was fairly good, although some of the characters didn't get enough of a chance to partake in it, to show their true colors/the way they changed. It was rushed but then landed in a good place. The middle of the story is a bit dull, although the several flashback sequences remain more interesting. The last chapter was my favorite, so at least the book ended on a high note. For the author's first novel, this isn't bad, although it had the potential to be even greater. I don't plan to read the sequel- I believe the ambiguous ending of this story is better than any sequel could be.

The Little Mermaid is one of my all-time favorite Disney movies, so I was very excited and intrigued by this take on an origin story. Overall, I did not have high expectations for this story, but I thought this book was fun and I just had a good time reading it. I really enjoyed seeing the story of the friend group and how much love Evie has for her friends. The ultimate betrayals broke me and made me very angry at the culprits. The plot is pretty slow in the beginning, and then a lot happens all at once towards the end, but I think it sets up the atmosphere for a series very well!

the ending made it for me i did not see that coming and was very very pleasantly surprised. But everything that came before that was j dull like this book is not some amazing adventure so it kinda felt like not much was going on. until the end.

i loved nik and evie's love story! i was so disappointed at the beginning when i found out she was into that other guy (who's name i already forgot... that tells u how irrelevant he was to me) bc i loved nik the entire time. But the author did such a good job at making u question their relationship w things that they say and do. There were so many points in the book where i suspected that he was into her or she was into him, but talked myself out of it saying "u j love nik so much ur reading into it" but there was this one scene were i couldn't ignore it anymore i was like HOLD ON HOLD. ON. WHAT IS GOING ON IS HE INTO HER OR NOT? and ugh i j loved that
i have never read a story like this before, i always read books where it's clear from the start that they're gonna fall in love.
also watching the other dude go from being this spr charming prince who saw her even tho she was a peasant or whatever to this fucking asshole was nice bc i didnt like him from the beginning.
good job sarah henning
