This gem was one of the best books I read this year. So glad that I finally took the time to read it.

I was struggling what to rate this one cause it was quite a slow book. However it was so emotional, the ending especially had me almost tearing up! It was dreadful what happend. However I did find the last part quite slow, hence why not a 4 star.

For me this book was weird but still oddly interesting. It is told from the viewpoint of a 5 year old which took me a long time to get use to. The story line was interesting and I did enjoy the plot.

UPDATE: read this June 2019, it’s Aug 2020 now. I understand basically everything I didn’t understand last year about this book. Still feel like it could be shorter but it is how it is. Didn’t buy a physical copy yet but I listened to the audiobook version when I read it last year which I don’t recommend as it is SOOOO long omg. The voice is cute tho, but definitely wish I would’ve just read the physical or ebook instead.
*SPOILERS*
I finished listening to this book yesterday, I loved it but I do have some complaints:
First off, I honestly wish it was written from the moms POV.
Second, I wish we knew more, like why Old Nick took Joy in the first place but also why he’s kept her for SEVEN YEARS! That’s crazy and horrible!
I wish that some sentences weren’t so repetitive, but I understand why as the story is told by a five year old who has only learned as much as his mom can teach him.
I don’t understand the part where Old Nick gets mad at Joy for asking for what they need, when he’s the one holding them captive and causing the trouble.
I didn’t really understand why the book didn’t end after Joy and Jack escaped, or at least why the author didn’t just make this a series, as the rest of the book was a little boring. I think that the part where Joys heart stops was unnecessary and just to prolong the book. I liked that the mom, Joy, didn’t talk to her son as if he’s baby or lie to him like most parents do.
I loved how real it got with everything from how much food they had, how skinny the mom was, how long his hair was from not being able to cut it, the rape, the stillborn, how tired she got from taking the “killers” (pain killers), etc.
I also liked the happy ending of Jack and Joy saying goodbye to Room, the egg snake, height markings, etc.
4/5 stars, would recommend or gift it to a friend/family member
