Cute coming of age story.   Quick read / listen.   We all reach a point that we realize everyone is flawed and you can choose joy wherever you are.

Fun, easy book to read. The end was a little too simplistic for me, and not consistent with the rest of the story. That having been said, I'm glad I read this - a fun story about a young girl growing up as learns about her family and the realities of life in a small town

i am very much not the intended audience for this book. acknowledging this but also i feel like the moral of this story is that … it’s okay to give up your dreams and settle in the hometown you loathed for the first 18 years of your life and left as soon as you possibly could? and that is honestly something i just don’t jive with. idk it just feels very tradwife coded to me

the saving grace was there were likable characters -not the main char mind you but like the mom’s friend who basically raised the main char & her sister, & the old lady out in the city.

idk it was a disappointing read. i almost DNF but i was convinced that it was going to resolve satisfyingly so i kept going (spoiler: it didn’t).

young girls reading this: you don’t need to settle for your homegrown jock high school boyfriend just because he was obsessed with you after you successfully escaped the whirlpool of mediocrity that was your hometown. STAY AMBITIOUS, STAY GONE. GO BUILD YOUR OWN LIFE.

I did appreciate the one sentence acknowledgement of Palestine. This isn’t the worst book I’ve ever read but even though it’s historical fiction, it was a little… too southern Christian heavily doused for my taste. I know it takes place in the late 60’s - mid 70’s Georgia but there was so much judgement that I had to scoff at some of these characters when they clearly were no better. The plot twists threw me for a loop but also felt obvious at the same time (at least with one character in particular.)
