I enjoyed this book, but I was never invested emotionally. It kinda reminded me of The Last of Us and the Fallout series so if you like those games, this will be a book for you. If course the other literary comparison is The Stand by Stephen King.

I say I enjoyed it, which is true, but there were many times when I felt underwhelmed.

I didn't like the shift that have fairly early on. But then I got used to what happened and I liked the slowness of the progression. Here's it kinda got a little too slow at the just over half way point.

I didn't really like all the religious stuff either. Same as with The Stand, I didn't really like how God came into it and that it made it feel like there was some greater thing behind it all.

I would have preferred that it was just a story about a human mistake and survival.

And I never became that attached to any of the characters so I never felt sad or relieved or happy about any of them.

I know this makes me sound like I didn't enjoy it much-i did. Cronin is a good writer, but I just felt there was a bit lacking.

When I compare it to The Last of Us and The Stand. I loved those characters. I felt them, knew them, liked them. I just didn't care as much for these.

What in the name of all that is good, epic, and totally believable when it comes to the end of the world as we know it. This book was AMAZING. 5/5 for me. Even though there was a bit of confusion on my part as to what I thought of this book. You just have to keep reading. Cronin keeps you waiting and waiting until the last page to find out more information about the characters. But he always answers those questions and keeps you updated. There is never a part where you go, but what about x. Because in the end those questions are answered and I LOVE THAT WHEN THAT HAPPENS!!! Highly recommend this book if you want a solid adult apocalypse story, with some delightfully graphic gore. I mean VAMPIRE TWIST!! Can’t wait to continue this trilogy.

I'm totally shocked that I read this and enjoyed it. Well written. Solid storytelling. Compelling characters.

Not at all what I was expecting, this end-of-the-world scenario is a captivating read that barely fits into it nearly 800 pages.

I'm pretty sure there is a sequel out there, and owing to the story and the possibilities for expanding on it, it may be just as hefty a tome.

I was a little lost at first when the main character from the beginning, didn't seem to be showing up again, but all that got settled and played out nicely.

May not look for the next one right away, but will definitely follow up at some point.
