For the Love of April French is a strong debut. An erotic romance featuring a trans woman and a Black man explores a BDSM relationship that grows into a loving relationship. Central to any relationship is trust, and the story explores its many facets: trust within a BDSM scene, trust in expressing feelings, trust in a partner, and trust in someone who says they want to show up and stick around. Challenges in finding community are a highlight, and the prejudices and laws that inhibit people of color and trans people are detailed, including navigating workplaces and access to health insurance. More importantly, the novel shows the reader the inner thoughts and perspectives of both main characters. Some readers may find this redundant, but it's what makes this story stand out: the emotional journey experienced by each partner. The conflict between the characters is realistic, which supports a HEA that feels grounded. A finely paced and written romance readers of the genre will find more than satisfying.
