I haven't read any of the Dark Tower books as I tend to avoid Stephen King, however a friend lent me his copy of the bound version of parts 1 to 7 of the comic adaptation. I found the combination of the script and artwork to be very atmospheric, and very enjoyable to read.

I thought the writing (adapted by someone other than King) was awful. Granted, I didn't finish the book itself -- which is why I picked up the graphic novel. I thought it might pique my interest back into the series. Nope.

The Gunslinger
3.5/5 stars

I have... mixed feelings about this one.

The plot:
Was very confusing. The parts that I did understand I enjoyed though and it made me want to pick up the book sometime soon. Plus I have the second trade that I read out of order so now I am excited to continue and see if I like that one better now.

The characters -
Most of them were alright and interesting enough but there was only one that I cared about.

Roland-
Was attractive and endearing and I was really routing for him the whole time. He never annoyed me and oh my gosh that cliffhanger with him was something else.

Overall-
A good set up, I really enjoyed the first third but at good chunk of it was confusing and I'm not sure if that was the writing or the fact that I was reading it in comic form. Gorgeous art style too.

I bought this years ago after seeing it randomly at a stall somewhere, assuming it was the graphic novel equivalent of the first book in the Dark Tower series.

Then, I discovered it was actually sections of Book 4 in the series, as the graphic novels follow the story chronologically rather than in book order. This put me off so I didn't read the thing for years, until now.

And I have to say I've been wasting time because The Gunslinger Born is an excellent graphic novel. The story moves at a brisk pace yet never feels like it's missing information or glossing over elements. And the art is fantastic. At first glance it wasn't my sort of art style at all, but it fits the tone of the story so perfectly it's impossible not to appreciate.

I don't know how accurately this represents the plot and narrative of the novel, but I enjoyed this enough to want to keep going with the graphic novels regardless.

-2.75*
-The world is interesting, like the story itself is okay, but it was kinda hard to grasp everything because, in my opinion, the scenarios and places kept changing too frequently, and because of that it was really confusing at times, especially in the beginning, although later you kinda get used to that frequent scenario change.
-characters were just okay to me and I ended up not really caring about them in the end.
-but one thing I liked was the art style and I might (someday) continue on with the Dark tower series to see were is it going from this point on
