I admit the last story in the collection makes no sense to me, but I just loved reading this entire thing. It’s always marvelous to hear stories and legends from other cultures and these were a charming delight.

Some cool fairy tales, just wish there had been a bit more cultural context on each one.

Nordic Tales was my first foray into the collection of folktale books from Chronicle Books. I enjoyed this collection and as always with story collections like this one there were favorites and ones that were just alright. Out of the seventeen tales, I had only heard of one – East of the Sun and West of the Moon. Some of my favorites were: The Forest Bride, Toller’s Neighbors, Old Nick and the Girl, “All I Possess”, and The Honest Penny. I enjoyed reading and learning from the stories from Norway, Finland, Sweden, Iceland & Denmark.
I do hope to purchase other eight books in the collection that Chronicle has and once my daughter is a little older I hope to share them all with her. The others in the series (so far) are: Celtic Tales, Tales of India, Tales of Japan, Tales of East Africa, Russian Tales, Ghostly Tales, Tales of the Sea & Monstrous Tales. There are so many wonderful folklore and mythology tales from all over and I have always found them so interesting. These editions are beautifully illustrated and bound – I highly recommend checking them out if you are interested in folklore and mythology from around the world.
