Had a very strong start with an interesting premise and characters. Unfortunately slowed in the middle and didn't entirely regain its momentum. Some plot points were given unsatisfying conclusions and ended quite underwhelmingly.

Fantastic worldbuilding. Intersting premise. Different type of fantasy book.

An enjoyable fantasy novel, and one that I understand the immense popularity of. Sanderson's writing feels fast paced and easily followable. The world is fleshed out and of course there is the magic system, which is the series' principal selling point. Much of the plot focuses on the interactions of this magic system though, and sometimes entire scenes will be dedicated to explaining why a sudden plan works. It means most of the plot is airtight, but the trade-off is that other things don't get the same attention. The setting is a familiar one that we've all seen before - the elite rule over the inferior masses, and only the special few can save them. It's a recognizable structure, but that doesn't at all mean it's bad or poorly done. I liked all of the characters, though I can't say I loved any one. Hopefully the sequels can fix that! 8/10.

It lulls for the first third of the book or so while he's worldbuilding, but once things started to pick up, I quickly couldn't put it down. It's a very intense gritty fantasy (see content warnings for details - it's...a lot), and the characterization is so good that they feel like old friends. It does have a shock twist at the end, so if you don't like those, I'd stay away. It made me absolutely bawl like a baby for a good hour after I finished it. Fantastic book!

I'm not sure why I'm not giving ut 5 stars... I loved it. EDIT: I've re-read it so much waiting to get the second one, that I'm giving it 5 stars.

Plots behind plots, plans behind plans. There was always another secret.

I found this book incomplete despite it's length and the depth at which it explores the lore. The main character, Vin, didn't seem very believable to me, especially considering the sections dealing with court intrigue. I think one of the big issues here is that I feel like Sanderson does a LOT of telling, but not a lot of showing. I wish the book explored better the ramifications of how the world was setup with how long it is and how slow the pacing felt. Instead it felt very one dimensional: the Skaa are downtrodden after 1000 years of oppression. The nobles are generally at best, too busy with court intrigue to care about anything else. I just felt like there were so many interesting themes (is it right to kill people complicit in oppressing others if they have never known another way? Is stability more valuable than freedom or equality?) to explore and Sanderson decided to write a long drawn out action movie instead.

I think it's interesting enough to read but I doubt I'll be able to finish another book.
