Sal reads like part survival guide and part harrowing story about a teenage girl who murders her abuser and runs off with her little sister to live in the woods. It covers some pretty heavy themes.
There were aspects of this I thought were really well done, like the characters. They were all well written and the author does an excellent job of putting the reader into Sal's mind to understand her fears and motivations. I was genuinely anxious about what was going to happen to the girls the whole way through this book. Both of them are so smart, so brave. Also, all of the survival trivia - I personally didn't mind it, but some might.
I think it could have been even shorter than it is. There were quite a few repetitive sentences as though the author copy and pasted the same information into every chapter which was a bit tedious to read.
