Bryson conveys the risks involved in visiting Kenya. However, the most peril he personally experienced was a light aircraft flight into Nairobi during a severe storm. As a guest of CARE, he visited a slum and a refugee camp, witnessing firsthand hundreds of thousands of human beings trapped in poverty. More positively he experienced the significant beneficial results of a micro-loan bank, a farming techniques training project, and a community water well which was built cooperatively with the locals and managed and maintained by the local community. The whole trip goes by in a flash, but Bryson conveys enough detail to make it vivid and informative.

Super short, but classic funny/thoughtful Bryson. Proceeds go to CARE International.

Short - didn't look to see how long when I got it as an ebook. Very powerful glimpse of how awful things can be for others.

Not one's usual Bryson book - this is a book specifically written to support CARE in its efforts to better the lives of people in Kenya and throughout the Third World by helping people to help themselves. I found it to be an admirable read.

A short diary, wish it was longer and he had spent more time in Africa

I like Bill Bryson's work but this is essentially a short commercial for the C.A.R.E., a charity organization.
