For as long as "Eve" (Evelyn) could remember, she and her mother have been on the run. Never knowing why, they never stayed in one place for more than a few months. Never trust anyone, never reveal your true identity. These things were pressed into her, but the reason was always unknown.

Eventually, Eve finds herself accepted into a prestigious school well known all over the world, specifically for working with Variants: people with special abilities. It's here that she learns she's no normal human but that she has Variant DNA. More things are revealed throughout the book, and she has no idea why her mother  had insisted on running away from the life she once had. By the end of the book, we discover some dark secrets, and it could very well be what her mother had been running from, and even what got others killed.

This book definitely has its emotional moments. It has times that my eyes may have watered just a little bit (perhaps someone was just cutting onion somewhere!). I'm happy that Eve was finally able to settle down somewhere for a while and open herself up to having friends for once. There was one point that two of the guys in the story, Ethan and Josh, treated her rather strangely (and rudely) after something particular happened, but then when something happened that had her running to them, fearing for their safety, the guys acted like they hadn't been mostly ignoring her for days and that things were all hunky-dory. She didn't even seem phased by it, which bugged me a bit. She had been really bothered by it, so why she let it slide so easily, I'm not sure. It really didn't seem like something she'd do. She's not one to just ignore how people treat her unless it's jealous women glaring at her for... reasons.

It was a good read, and I'm jumping right into book two to see what happens next!

I really liked this series. I pretty much devoured it. Unfortunately I waited too long to review everything soooo I'm lacking specifics.
I do remember thinking the magic system was interesting and the romance was done very well. The characters also didn't act super young which is another huge plus.
