A winding but effervescent study of several major artists and myths in history. I found myself wishing I was more steeped in the work Calasso was pointing me towards and that he stayed longer with each but that's personal desire more than it is a failure on his part. I think I found his rhythm in the last two sections, on Mallarme etc.

I enjoy this collection of essays. I wish there was more gods than literature, but honestly it motivated me to read some new authors, so even though I couldn’t totally grasp some of Calasso’s references, his great analysis sparked some curiosity in me.

Roberto Calasso's writing is beautiful and poetic. It feels like he's talking directly to you in some rundown old bar. And, like bar talk, I often don't understand what he's musing about but it is interesting to listen too. Though perhaps not absorb much of it.

A thought provoking work about reading and gods. Rather interesting, and something I find impossible to review because I am always thinking about it. Have to say I love the comments about reading.
