“I would live alone for fifty years to have one day with you.”
It wasn't as hard to understand as I thought it would be. I liked the characters, the worldbuilding was immaculate, the friendships are the strong point of the book and the slow burn romance was just on point. But I would admit the plot sometimes was boring and the ending was so fast that it left me a little disappointed, like what do you mean the book is 830 pages long and this big and terrifying villain got defeated in a little more than 20 pages? Also what was with all of those fables and myths? there was no necessity for some of those.
Anyway long live to Sabran and Tané, I love them.

The detail in this book is incredible, and the characters are deeper than most tend to be in epic fantasies. I loved the story and the personal growth you can see from each character throughout their adventures.

Read it in under a week. Less words than I thought. Very attached to the characters

In the interest of keeping this brief and avoiding spoilers, I will just say that I really enjoyed this book and the world and characters that came with it. I was totally engrossed, and for a while I didn't want it to end. The only thing keeping this from being 5 stars in my book is the pacing in the last third of the book. The end happens too quickly and it feels like we don't spend as much time on certain plot points and scenes as we should. I think more detail could have been added and the pace slowed a bit while still allowing this to remain a standalone novel. The prequel that came out earlier this year is about 100,000 words longer, and I can't help but feel this book would have been better served by that length.
Regardless of these shortcomings, I still had a wonderful time reading this book and am looking forward to reading A Day of Fallen Night or any future sequels that Shannon chooses to write. I would recommend this book to fans of the high fantasy genre, especially those looking for a story with a strong, believable, and well-written female lead.

It’s been 84 years… but I’ve finally finished this book!! This TOME 😂
Going into felt overwhelming - it’s so long, and there’s a million places and characters thrown at you. It is high fantasy after all. And Ms. Shannon definitely knew my weakness (names). Literally ask the people I love how many times a day I say “I forgot the name but” and continue to describe something so obvious 😂
But somehow, the Mother gifted me with enough brainpower to not only remember people (after writing down 7 names) but places too (after writing down 5) and less than a hundred pages in I was remembering everyone and everything and knew exactly what was going on and I was HOOKED.
So, go into it with a mindset of this is your textbook and you’ll be fine 😂
We have dragons, we have magic, we have pirates, we have politics, we have cultures, we have religions, we have POC, we have sapphics, we have gays, we have queers. In a whole ass fantasy world!
And what a world it is.
I understand why this is compared to Game of Thrones. Because I’d be winter if this got turned into a series (coming)
4.5 stars because this was an entire 800 book leading up to this massive battle… that was over in 30 pages. And also because of throwing so many names at me at first that I actually had to write them down without even knowing there was a whole ass glossary of them at the back 😂
