See it before. Like the movie Crash, but somehow more tedious.

I appreciated the premise and thought it was very ambitious of the author to address issues like war and racism through the lives of individual characters. I liked reading about the characters but I felt like there was a bit too much distance between them and the reader.

What a story! I could not put it down. Nora and Jeremy were wonderful characters and rooting for them was not difficult.

Having grown up to that area I could easily visualize everything. Some have reviewed that the author put everything in here - racism, drugs, veteran, hate crime, etc. But if you knew the area you would know all of these are front and central for this area. None is more overt than the other. They all live in relation to one another and she did a fantastic job of describing an area where all of these social ills intermingle.

A very good novel, with each character voice pitch perfect. It’s a low key portrayal of how much we other each other, how corrosive and even deadly racism is, and the endless micro aggressions every minority endures. Among the topics the book hits, gently but powerfully, are racism, homophobia, chauvinism and gender bias, anti immigrant bias, fat shaming, and anti-Islamic bias.
