This was slow to get into and I just can't listen to Dan Calley's voice at a higher speed than 1.75x. It doesn't sound right over that. I did enjoy the slow burn and hopeful it'll be a HEA in the next book. Also the storage room scene gets all the chili peppers.

I received my copy of this book for free in exchange for my honest review! This book was the pick me up I needed this month.

It’s the first in the series, so if you aren’t into waiting for the next installment, this might not be for you. But here’s why I think you’ll like it…

I went into reading this book straight off of a reading slump. I hadn’t been feeling my best, but I knew I promised this review, so I decided to start it around 5pm. I didn’t put it down until I was done reading it.

I really enjoyed the characters. I think James is my favorite, but I have a problem with thinking “I can fix him” about every fictional man I read. Tom is a close second because I love a man that could toss me like a ragdoll. Even George seemed like he’d be fun to party with.

I’d consider this book to be slow paced in the smut department, but the tension that builds over the course of the book is perfect! With all the drama you expect from a regency era story, I never felt lost or bored while I was reading. There are layers to this story and I want to figure out what each of them are.

Now, I’m sad because I have to wait for book 2. 😭

I was so grateful to receive an ARC of this book so I could provide a fair review.

A couple of notes:
  • This is a regency-era reverse harem! Yes, it is both!
  • This is the first in a duology, so don't expect a happy ending just yet!

Rosalie Harrow (she/her) has been invited to a house party by the Dowager Duchess of Norland, an old friend of her deceased mother. A group of women have been invited for the George (the, erm....eccentric Duke) to find an appropriate wife. While there, she meets James (George’s uptight/stressed younger brother), Burke (his charming best friend the duchess has taken in as an adoptive son), and Tom Renley (close friend to Burke & James who is begrudgingly seeking a wife). Due to her past, Rosalie is completely against the idea of marriage, but that doesn’t stop her from developing feelings for all of these men. And boy, do they feel something about her, too.

Some highlights:
  • If this book had just been about Burke, or James, or Tom, it would have been a compelling love story filled with plenty of tension and drama. The fact that this is a story about ALL THREE of them means there was not one slow moment!
  • Rosalie might be one of my favorite historical romance heroines? We love a regency-era woman who understands how important independence is if its possible!
  • The storyline with the dowager duchess is just, chef’s kiss.
  • And of course, the spice is fantastic.

ESCAPES Rating:
Enjoyment - 10 | Start - 9 | Characters - 10 | Atmosphere - 9 | Plot - 10 | Ending - 9 | Style - 10

I cannot wait for the second book to come out!
