I loved this so so so much. It's clever and witty and surprising and heartfelt and so absorbing. I will be thinking about this for years to come.

I love how Fredrik Backman talks about such serious and dark topics. There's so much kindness and empathy without glorifying that I always feel safe to read his books. If you find suicide particularly triggering, this may be too much as, while there aren't graphic descriptions, it is sort of central to the story.

Backman is incredible at creating and developing a cast of characters. He flushes every character out and made me interested in every storyline even though I would not have been interested just based on the description. In this book he was so good at making me reflect on society and the lack of community we have.

It was so beautiful to see people so willing to help someone that could be seen as a criminal. We need to be more empathetic today and realize that not everyone has the same privileges. We need to hear people’s stories and put ourselves in their shoes and give a helping hand. That can truly change the outcome of their lives.

This was a phenomenal read.
I’ve always been a fan of the sentimental so this book struck a chord with me. It evokes all the feelings, from laughter to tears. While the book is about a bank robbery gone wrong, it’s really about the people involved in this hostage scene and about people in general. Looking into each person’s mind and heart, Backman makes a point on how messy life is and how idiotic we all can be, and calls us as readers to have empathy for our fellow humans. 
I also enjoyed the drama of it all, though. For two thirds of the book I really wasn’t sure who the bank robber was and if they’d catch them or what was going to happen. I liked the plot twists told through a nonlinear timeline that kept me reading beyond the sentimental parts and the idiotic humorous parts. 
Overall, a fantastic beautiful read and a reminder that we’re all going through something, but it gets a little better if we have each other’s backs.
