I liked the premise of the book, but I worry that the first pages of text (and one other) are too long for the illustrations (not much to occupy the eyes of little ones).

I wish all of the pages had spot illustrations—but the pages that, in my opinion, had too much text, were the ones without.

This book also gives me all the feels today—I feel very much like a green snake these days, only without the figure eight.

I adore the message in the book, plus it was just really cute and I loved the art style.

I really love this story, but it was never a favorite of my kids. So...I guess the hardback copy I purchased was mostly for me.

Honestly, now that my little ones are teens and my own skin is getting old, I can really relate to lithe Verdi not wanting to change color and get fat!

Oh, Verdi. I'm with you on this one: it's scary becoming green. But, I'll keep on enjoying what I have always enjoyed. Stay yellow on the inside. ;]

I’ve always wanted to read this book, but never bought it. I never borrowed it from the library, either. My first first grader grew up to become a married woman living in Ireland, and I still had not read this book. So when the library was having a book sale, I picked it up. Finally! I can read it!

Then I didn’t touch it for a year.

That is in no way a reflection on whether I liked the book or not. I actually liked it quite a bit. It has a solid story, which is charming which fresh, whimsical twists, but the art is what sells the book for me. Cannon used Liquitex acrylics and prismacolor pencils to great effect. (Do they even make Liquitex paint anymore?) My only complaint is that the artwork tended to have flat contrast. However, most people will hardly notice.

Verdi was a fun coming of age story. I especially liked the informative information about snakes in the appendix. I’m glad I finally made time to read it.

Verdi is a very playful snake who never wants to grow up. The pictures are beautifully colored and very friendly to the eye. The story is cute as we watch Verdi do tricks and tell the other snakes that he will never lay around. Yellow Verdi starts to turn green and panics that he will become like the other snakes. He does everything he can to get rid of the green. His antics are humorous and children love identifying with the silly snake.
