Slow start, it felt a little silly because I was reading a book aimed at children in middle school but once the initial introduction was out of the way it was a good book, I look forward to the second book.

It starts off light-hearted and cute, and gets real-deep and powerful into the series. Vlad is such a great character- he's a teenage boy who doesn't fit in and has to find his way. On top of that- vampires, conspiracies, lying, murder- the works. And he just wants to spend time with his friends and ask out the pretty girl at school. Definitely give it a read!

The action is slow and unimpressive but the writing style is very engaging.

Vlad Tod is a likeable eigth grade boy with one small problem. He is a vampire. Actually he is half-vampire/half-human, a product of a forbidden love however which resulted in the death of his loving parents three years prior.
Vlad is capable of living a somewhat normal life as a middle school student, with the help of lots and lots of sunscreen, hidden blood capsules in his lunch, a wonderful guardian, and a popular best friend.
This book is a quick read, enjoyable, and great for young adults and adults wanting to enjoy a simple vampire story. I am very much looking forward to reading the next book in the series and would have preferred to have given this book 4 and a half stars.

I had hoped in vain that this book was much more than it turned out to be. This book felt a lot more like Middle Grade than Young Adult/Teen, although I probably should've expected that due to the setting and age of the main character. However, according to other reviews, the books don't seem to mature as the series progresses unfortunately. :(
Graphic: Bullying, Blood, Violence, and Injury/Injury detail
Moderate: Death
Minor: Death of parent

My boyfriend wanted me to read the series. He read it in middle school and loved it. It was overall a good read. Obviously a JV series, so don't expect anything adult or crazy. It only took me about 2 and a half hours total to read the whole thing. Starting the second one soon!
