You can tell that this volume of the Original Text Nancy Drew was written by a man. "Nancy proved herself to be a real girl, in that buying good-looking new clothes gave her a great thrill." What the heck is that? That's not the Nancy Drew that Mildred Wirt portrayed in about 25 volumes of the series. Walter Karig, the ghost writer, keeps mentioning her fur coat and how swell she looks in it, and also spends way too much time describing how Nancy drives; he even has the color of her roadster wrong: he keeps mentioning it as maroon when in every other volume, it is blue. There's also a lot about the Emerson football game. Now don't get me wrong, I like football a lot, but don't tell me that a 10-year girl in 1932 would have the same sort of interest.

Helen Corning is introduced to Nancy in this volume, which makes no sense because they were fairly tight "chums" in the first four volumes, when Helen is engaged to Jim Archer. In this volume, Helen is dating some guy from Emerson. No continuity whatsoever.

Definitely not one of my favorites. Now it is on to the Revised Text to see if they sucked all the testosterone out of this.

I think this may be my favorite mystery so far, it's definitely a bit more complex and interesting than the previous ones in the series. In this story, we learn that Nancy is the best "girl detective" ever, and that she's a gifted parallel-parker. Her romance with Ned develops, and she gets away from home for a little while. I'd definitely recommend this to fans of the series!

I found myself beside a bonfire with about 3 hours left until midnight on NYE so I picked this up as it was the next Nancy Drew on my shelf. I read this one about 20 years ago and I have to say that I remembered absolutely nothing about it. It was not really the most intriguing premise and I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to find this one. As always, reading the references to things that existed in the '60s and are basically eradicated made me laugh.
