every male comic creator has to be edgy by tossing in racism, homophobia, the r slur among others, and gratuitous female nudity and rape scenes!

Enjoyed the movie, and forgot it was a comic first. Very gory, but thats not a bad thing. Honestly, it made me laugh at how these guys came up with everything. The art in this is just wonderful. The dialogue is witty. What more could I ask for?

Apparently, in the fifteen years since [b:Watchmen|472331|Watchmen|Alan Moore|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1238274511s/472331.jpg|4358649] was published, the bar has been significantly raised regarding how much over-the-top violence required to parody/subvert over-the-top violence in comic books. To be fair (to myself or this book; I'm not entirely sure which (ultra-violence is not really my thing. It's not exactly a subtle or multilayered story, but it does what it does with a certain verve that I can't help but appreciate.
I haven't seen the movie, but apparently it seriously soft-pedals two important plot points. Without that origin and conclusion in bleakness and nihilism, the element of subversion isn't there anymore and neither is the point.

Has all of Millar's weird baggage, but man does this move well. Super fun with JRJR (One of the greats!!) on pencils. Got a huge laugh from the endcap on the relationship Dave has with the girl at his school. Idk, goes down easy and has some fun action and character beats - liked it quite a bit!

I was surprised to find I didn't like this as much as the movie. It came off a bit flat, with not much build up to many of the big events and then those events were over way to fast. It just didn't have the solid structuring of the movie. I still loved Dave, though, and some of the events (like his relationship with Katie) were more realistic/true of the theme of the work.

Kick Ass Re-Read - PART 1
So, now that we are all spending some time in isolation I thought it time to revisit my favourite series from my teenage years. The First Addition of Kick Ass, has always been middle of the pack for me. When I initially read it, it was arguably one of my favourite graphic novel of all time, however now that every entry in the series is released, it really doesn't hold up to the others, but what it does do well is act as a great scene setter for the rest of the series.
Mindy aka Hit Girl is STILL my favourite character, and I assume that will never ever change. She is just a really well written character, and is so funny and a total bad ass. Looking forward to moving onto the Prelude Novel!
One thing I did notice is that I don't think this book would have been released in 2020, and if it did it would have been seriously filtered. We as a society have moved on from certain slurs and whatnot, so seeing them used so flippantly in this kinda made me think 'oh yeah, people just said this stuff on the fly back then to seem cool'. But it didn't detract anything from the work, and certainly wasn't anything overtly offensive.
My one real issue with this issue (and the same for the Prelude) is that everything ends too quickly and everything is wrapped up too quickly for my liking at least. I would prefer a little build up and drama to the climax/final fight.
Looking forward to the rediscovering my love for this series! Onto the next one!

My first Millar comic. Very fun and good art, a way to talk about fandom culture and its impacts, as it explores what would happen if people really tried to be superheroes. Enjoyable, and ends very tidily despite its dark tone throughout (I read the Dave Lizewski arc).
