She shook her head. "This isn't something sheep can understand," she said.
"No," said Fosco. "No, it really isn't anything sheep can understand.“

Clever premise: sheep as narrators. I liked how the author conveyed the sheep’s unique ways of sensing and understanding their world, especially how they perceive the humans and human interactions around them. But I thought the pace dragged in some spots. And  I found it challenging to keep track of who was who in the large cast of human and sheep characters.

Definitely a story that will stay with you. By the end I was understanding the sheep far more than I understood the human characters! Loveable sheep, quirky personalities, and not all is as it seems with the humans. Swann was very adept at making me think like a sheep, her writing is fresh and unusual. Highly recommend this slow to unfurl whodoneit.

'Three Bags Full' by Leonie Swann is a humorous, cozy murder mystery told from the viewpoints of a flock of sheep.
When their shepherd ends up dead in the field with a spade sticking out of him, his flock of sheep will do whatever they can to get to the bottom of who killed him. There are a couple of suspects, including the butcher, and so the flock will have to spy at windows and follow their suspects to discover what really happened.
This is such a fun book and the audiobook was really engaging. Each sheep has their own distinct personality and it was fun to get to learn about each of them. Swann is able to poke and prod at humanity through the eyes of the sheep and their misunderstandings of human choices and motivations makes for a lot of comedy. There is also a lot of heart in this story as you can feel how deeply the flock cares for their deceased shepherd. I hope that they translate the second book in this series because this one is a lot of fun.

I love the concept of reading stories from the perspective of non-human entities (see Ancillary Justice, Raptor Red) and so this was so fun!

I always love xenofiction featuring overlooked or underappreciated animals, especially with a wacky premise, and this book certainly delivers on the first front, if not the second. The sheep characters and their way of looking at the world were delightful. The human characters were not as interesting but certainly had a lot of depth of their own. While this book bills itself as a murder mystery, it's not so much about figuring out whodunnit (the solution to the mystery is a bit nonsensical because there were little to no actual clues leading up to it) but about piecing together what's actually happening in the human world through the limited viewpoint of the sheep. Overall, lovely reading experience, but that lackluster ending was enough to dock a whole star.
