I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author/publisher in exchange for an honest review!

This is a follow up to My Demonic Ghost but it is also a prequel too. I loved this book. This story filled in some of the questions I had left over from the first book.

This is Jordan Hastings story. He was killed by a fellow classmate in a fit of jealous rage causing him to become a Reaper. What is a reaper you ask? Well Jordan's job with the help of his Goon is to show up when someone dies and collects their Spirit to then take to the drop off. This is a difficult thing for Jordan to come to terms with but eventually he begins to accept this.

Jordan is a rule breaker and I love him for it. He enters the Sin World to free a Banished Spirit in hopes of getting their help with watching over another Banished Spirit. This other Banished Spirit is important to him and will cause Jordan to look for a way to free all the Banished Spirits.

I enjoyed meeting new Reapers and getting to know them through Jordan. His interactions with the Reapers and the Hunters kept me on my toes. Some of the Reapers I developed a real liking for while others I really didn't care for. We also got some of the back story on the Hunters. The Hunters have control over the Reapers and Jordan hopes to end that while freeing the Banished.

This book had everything I was expecting it to have. There's love (maybe not always romantic), adventure, action, and yes I even cried. Thank you Jacinta Maree for the return trip. I got to explore more of the Sin World in this story. If I may say it's just as nasty and scary as my first trip there, I love it. Thank you for keeping to what I would expect from the Sin World. It may just be one of my favorite things about these books. This is a great read that I will recommend to my fellow readers.

So... this took me a bit to get into. I'm not sure why because the beginning of the storyline was really interesting but I just couldn't connect with the characters. And it seemed a little slow even with everything happening. The actual storyline is what kept me wanting to read because it is really out of the ordinary. I mean, it's one thing for ghosts to talk but for a spirit that is invading your body? That's just weird.

I think also, I didn't like Lock at first. He acts like a petulant child and throws tantrums that are really serious to Rachael. I mean seriously, he reminded me of my three year old nephew but finally he starts acting like a normal person (uhh sorta at least) and I was finally able to get into the story. The only weird thing was their relationship. I just couldn't mesh with it completely so I think even though I was fully committed to this plot, which is really cool, I just wasn't totally sure about their relationship. I did wind up liking Lock in the end though :D

My fav character was Betrayal. What a cool freaking name! I loved every part with her in it and sort of hoped that Rachael would learn from Betrayal's strength. Rachael always seems like a damsel in distress to me, which I really do not like in a main character, but then again Rachael has been through some seriously whacked out stuff!

Overall really interesting story. Slow to get into but once it started moving I really enjoyed it. And as a horror fan I thought it lived up to that genre, may not have been the most horrific thing I've read but it was good.

Jacinta Maree has created an engrossing and inventive series with My Demonic Ghost. It's a refreshing YA series and such a unique take on the afterlife.

Book one, Banished Spirits centers around Rachael and Lock. An unlikely pair who are thrown together with the death of Rachael's father. After a rocky start they slowly begin to trust each other. Rachael is young, brave and selfless. After hearing Lock's story and the world he, and now she, lives in, she decides to help him. I'm not sure I'd be so forgiving and understanding in her position. She probably agrees a little too quickly, but after seeing her father deteriorate I think she wants to be free of Lock as soon as possible. Lock is very disgruntled and petulant, and he doesn't treat Rachael very well. I didn't like how he always told Rachael how unimportant she was. Although, as the story progresses I began to understand that he just wanted to be accepted and free. He's been beaten down, but I loved watching him strive to be a better person.

Banished Spirits is creepy and imaginative, each of the seven deadly sins are described in detail and they are definitely horrifying. The world Maree has created is dark and unforgiving. You might want to leave the lights on for this one.
