Nice but not great. 6th book in a series that I've mostly read for the Endeavour Award - the 3rd book unfortunately was the peak - this book feels a bit tired but not bad. 3.5 of 5.

The series just keep getting better and better. We learn about Allie and her memory loss not being because of her using magic, Zay shows a side of him we have not seen before, he seems harder then he used to be and a bit more harsh. Allie and her relationship with her dad seems to have changed a little bit and there isn't as much bickering going on. The Hounds get involved a bit. The only thing I am upset about is Allie still not having her personal inner magic thing back, I so want her to get it back and it bugs the heck out of me seeing her not have it and talk about the empty spot. The whole book was filled with tension, action and revelations. Everything is really coming together in the series and moving at a great pace. Im not sure how many books are planned for the series but if they all continue on as well as MAGIC ON THE HUNT I will not miss one.

This is the sixth book in the Allie Beckstrom series by Devon Monk and I really love every book. The secondary characters are as wonderful as the mains. This was really a good story but this is a series is a must read in order. I can't wait for the next one and will pre-order it in a heart beat.

This felt like a lot of closure - I wonder if it was originally going to be the end of the series? I was happy to see the Hounds back again.

I found Zay to be an almost completely different character in this book and I am getting a bit tired of the never ending complicated plots, particularly those of Allie's father. I would like to see a some resolution and a break of more than 3 days before Allie is thrown into yet another save the world from the dire magic situation which is linked to the previous 500 other times. Rather than more twists caused by her father's complicated plotting I would like to see Allie get some real concrete information and act on her own initiative rather than it all be more of her father's complicated manipulations. Would also love to see Allie get some of her memory back (or at least get some control of her life back). Also I hate the Authority and the way they run around wiping the memories of everyone they deem not important enough to retain the memory of magic. I think the hounds and Stotts deserve to know what going on and am therefore not completely comfortable with Allie's obedience to them (but I understand why she does) I am less understanding of Zay's blind obedience. As always I love Shame.

But when the trail leads Allie and Zayvion to the secret prison where the Authority locks away magical criminals who are too dangerous to be held anywhere else, they find more than they bargained for. An undead magic user has possessed one of the prisoners, and he wants his freedom--and then some. Now Allie and Zayvion are the first line of defense against the chaos he's about to unleash on the city of Portland...
After the events in Magic at the Gate, Allie and Zay could definitely use some R&R. Unfortunately peace and relaxation aren't in the cards for these two. Once they arrive back at Allie's apartment, intent on getting said R&R, Dane Lanister (Sedra's right-hand man) shows up with deadly intent, demanding to speak with Allie's father. The down side to that is that he's possessing Allie and refuses to surface for conversation.
Allie and Zay do manage to get rid of Dane, but they both suffer some injuries and they're both extremely pissed. When they report to the Authority about what happened, Victor says that the priority belongs to locating Sedra. His thought process behind this being that if they locate Sedra, Jingo-Jingo (the one who kidnapped her) and Dane won't be far off. While the two of them agree that finding Sedra is important, they both want Dane. Allie decides that she's going to bring the Hounds in (on a look-don't touch job) so that while she's with the Authority looking for Sedra, the Hounds can hopefully find Dane.
I was really excited because this book mostly featured all my favorite characters--Shame, Terric, Allie, Zay and Stone (yes he's a gargoyle, but I still really like him).
Shame is such a smart-ass, funny and he'll do anything to protect those he cares about, especially Terric. While Shame isn't willing to acknowledge his feelings, there's definitely something between the two of them. Terric obviously sees is, why else hasn't he returned to Seattle? I honestly want something to come from the relationship between those two, because it just seems like something that could be great for both of them.
Zay and Allie are a great couple as well. It's obvious that they're going to make this work, even if they have to actually work at their relationship. Granted, the past says that things don't turn out well for Soul Complements, but Allie and Zay are different and I think they'll make it.
I would also like to see more of Violet and Kevin. Clearly, he definitely has feelings for her, and I think she's feels more than friendly about him, so I want that to evolve. Nola and Paul are another couple that I would like to see their relationship evolve into something more. Based on information from the other books, Paul seems to be the first person since her husband that Nola's actually seemed interested in and Paul seems protective of her and Cody.
I'm still confused about Daniel's reasons for being in Allie's head. At first I thought it was just because he'd been brought back and then took up residence in the closest space he could find (which was Allie at the time). After the events in this book, I'm wondering if there wasn't more to how Allie ended up being the convenient space to inhabit. He seemed particularly angry when he was locked up by Victor and Shame. All of these things, plus Allie's previous feeling for him, paint him as a heartless jerk who cares about nothing but himself. However, Violet must have seen something in him and, from the couple times he's taken over Allie in her presence, he clearly cared for her. That plus the box of Allie's dreams that they found paint a different picture. I want to know if he's really the bad guy that he seems to be being portrayed as or if he's really a good guy who's just trying to protect those he cares about!
And of course, who could forget about Stone? He's so cute in his stacking abilities and his learning. He certainly caught on to Jenga quickly. Then he also protected Cody from seemingly out of nowhere and Cody seems to like him too.
Can't wait to see what's next for our heroes!

My favourite of the series so far. No doubt. Seriously fantastic! I'm just annoyed now I'll have to wait a whole week before the next book arrives in the post ;)

Oh how much I love Devon Monks’ Allie Beckstrom series. I have never missed a beat with her amazing Urban Fantasy. Once again Allie and the gang are trying to track down some magical baddies, with the head of the Authority missing a lot of chaos is happening. Allie is still dealing with her father possessing her body and with all the danger that lies ahead; it’s actually a good thing he’s there. This is one series that I can’t get enough of and I really love how kick butt Allie is.
REVIEW:
Book number 6 in the series, I swear sometimes I feel the need to wrap Allie in bubble wrap to keep her safe. She is always in the middle of the magic craziness and she doesn’t always get out unharmed.
Allie is a strong lead character and having her father possessing her body is not an easy thing to get use to. Her father was pretty powerful and knew some tricks that make Allie that much stronger. She lost a bit of magic in the last book but gained something else from the death side of things. I felt bad for her this time around because she is the protective type and when her friends are in trouble she really tries her best to protect them, sometimes asking for her father to help out. But no matter what she does sometimes people she loves get hurt.
Zayvion is back of course; Allies lover and magical man extraordinaire, he and his crew Terric and Shame are working for the Authority. They are to take down an undead magic user who is determined to possess a body. Meaning he will stop at nothing to do so and with them in the way a lot injuries are sure to follow. Zavyion frustrated me a bit this time around because as much as he loves Allie he really puts her down sometimes like she’s a child and she is definitely not. I’m waiting for the day when she gets crazy powerful.
Shame and Terric are big key characters this time around and I love it. Their bickering and sarcasm I can’t get enough of. Shame always wants some whiskey, where Terric is always making sure Shame doesn’t do anything stupid. They are a fantastic pair.
RECOMMENDATION:
This is an adult novel with lots of violence but not gruesome. If you’re a fan of Jennifer Estep and Chloe Neill you’ll love this series! I highly recommend this, so what are you waiting for!

These books are always so awesome Zay is one of my fav. love interests. He is going in my all time fav. love interest lists with Shane, Bones, Curren and Damon.Her father was the worst in this book though and now I really want something bad to happen to him. He doesn't care at all for Allie and I really think Violet should find out somehow he is taking Allie over and she should be outraged by it. Maybe Violet will be the one to get his away from Allie.
