I was charmed by the world building and the way Emily interacts with the world. I also enjoyed Wallace as well. The two of them together are such a silly adventure.

This was a lovely academic fantasy with cozy elements. The romance was subtle and believable. The only part that didn’t quite land for me was the very end, as it seemed to all wrap up a bit too quickly.

A nice quick and refreshing break from the slow book I put aside for a bit. "Whimsical" appears twice on the cover and it is certainly that.

Emily Wilde is an academic at Cambridge in 1909 (no discussion of the real troubles women would have had at the time in trying to enter academia), writing the Encyclopedia of Faeries. She visits an island off Norway for the final chapter. Cue encounters with courtly and common Folk, myths, footnotes (like a shorter Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell), and the local villagers.

Yes it could be deeper and more involved, and it could be more accurate to the British English of the time ("restroom" and "movies"??!), and it didn't need to
descend into romance
... But it was fun yet seemingly well researched and thought out.

Just so freaking charming and delightful. Nerdy fairy academic, and a grumpy female lead? Who then inadvertently learns the power of community and helping others and then letting them help you?! SO DELIGHTFUL!

Super fun read with really lovable characters. Equal mix of silly and serious with Emily’s character development and journey navigating new emotional and social experiences balancing well with the fantasy adventure theme. Although fantasy stories about fairies are common, the characters were very unique and gave this novel so much fun spice.

What a fun light hearted read! This was a good pallet cleanser between more dark series. This reminded me of the book, “Once Upon a Broken Heart” by Stephanie Garber.
